Iron Deficiency in Pregnancy
Dr. Jillian Coolen
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Recognize and diagnose iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy: Apply a systematic approach to screening and diagnosis, including interpretation of hemoglobin and ferritin, recognition of iron deficiency without anemia, and appropriate timing of testing in pregnancy and postpartum. [CanMEDS: Medical Expert / Scholar]
- Select evidence-based iron replacement therapy: Differentiate when oral versus IV iron is appropriate, prescribe effective oral iron regimens, assess treatment response, and counsel patients regarding efficacy, tolerability, safety, and expected outcomes. [CanMEDS: Medical Expert / Scholar / Communicator]
- Implement SOGC Guideline No. 469 in obstetrical practice: Translate the recommendations into practical approaches to antenatal screening, oral and intravenous iron therapy, predelivery optimization, and postpartum management of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia. [CanMEDS: Medical Expert / Scholar / Collaborator / Health Advocate / Leader]
Progesterone Update
Dr. Saja Anabosi
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Differentiate the indications for vaginal progesterone in the current pregnancy – specifically, applying the SOGC recommendation to treat a short cervix while avoiding routine progesterone based solely on a history of spontaneous preterm birth. [CanMEDS: Medical Expert]
- Critically appraise the landmark evidence on progesterone for preterm birth prevention and explain how discordant trial findings informed the revised SOGC recommendations. [CanMEDS: Scholar]
- Incorporate the updated guidance into cervical-length screening pathways and advocate for individualized, evidence-based access to progesterone for patients most likely to benefit. [CanMEDS: Health Advocate]
Perimenopause
Dr. Robin Ryan
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Recognize and assess perimenopause, including its clinical presentation, hormonal physiology, and the appropriate role and limitations of laboratory testing. [CanMEDS: Scholar/Medical Expert]
- Evaluate abnormal uterine bleeding and other common presentations during the menopause transition. [CanMEDS: Scholar/Medical Expert]
- Develop an individualized management plan for perimenopause symptoms incorporating hormonal and non-hormonal therapies, contraception when required, and opportunities for long term health risk assessment and modifications. [CanMEDS: Scholar/Medical Expert/Health Advocate]
FHR Tracing Rounds
Drs. Gabby DiLorenzo and Sarah Herst
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Describe the principles of intrapartum fetal health surveillance. [CanMEDS: Scholar]
- Recognize and distinguish common fetal heart rate patterns, and apply SOGC terminology consistently when communicating fetal status. [CanMEDS: Communicator]
- Integrate fetal heart rate tracings within a clinical context and develop an appropriate response to abnormal fetal heart rate patterns. [CanMEDS: Leader / Medical Expert]
From PCOS to PMOS: Rethinking a Multisystem Disorder Beyond the Ovary
Dr. Zaina Albawali
Objectives:
- Explain the rationale for the transition from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) to
polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS)
- Recognize PMOS as a heterogeneous, multisystem endocrine and metabolic disorder
- Apply the evolving PMOS framework to clinical practice
AI in OBGYN
Dr. Mark Hewitt
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Define artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning; distinguish how each behaves in clinical applications; and describe the current state of physician and patient adoption, including the scale of FDA-cleared devices and the reach of consumer AI platforms. [CanMEDS: Scholar]
- Identify deep learning applications spanning the OB/GYN subspecialties, including fetal cardiac screening, preeclampsia prediction, automated ICSI, cervical cancer screening, and computational pathology, and anticipate near-, medium-, and long-term directions. [CanMEDS: Medical Expert]
- Evaluate the ethical implications of AI in OB/GYN, including diagnostic asymmetry, deskilling risk, environmental cost, health equity, and the tension between AI as a “second set of eyes” versus a decision-maker, and develop strategies to address these in practice. [CanMEDS: Professional]
ASOG Skills Lab
Faculty: Drs. Lise Gagnon, Chelsea Harris, Becky Healy, Erin Hemsworth, Katie Matheson and Anita Smith
PPH Management – Medications, Devices and Surgical Management
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Review the medical management of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH).
- Review the surgical technique for B-Lynch sutures in the management of PPH.
- Review the placement and troubleshooting of PPH devices.
Office Hysteroscopy
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Set up and safely operate equipment for office hysteroscopy, including appropriate scope and instrument handling, fluid management, and organization of patient and equipment flow within an outpatient clinic setting. [CanMEDS: Medical Expert / Leader]
